In the hazardous goods market, packaging and regulations are an inseparable pair. Transporting hazardous goods demands strict compliance with international and national regulations to safely move flammable, toxic, corrosive, or explosive products. Berlin Packaging’s Dangerous Goods division helps customers in transporting and storing dangerous goods, such as the prototype lithium batteries of SGS customers. The unique collaboration between Berlin Packaging and SGS ensures that companies from all over the world no longer must worry about the complex logistical challenge of shipping prototype batteries.

SGS: Expertise in testing, inspection and certification

SGS is the world's largest testing, inspection, and certification company. With extensive knowledge of hazardous goods regulations and requirements, SGS supports clients across diverse industries globally. As part of their services, SGS frequently ships prototype batteries—newly developed batteries produced in small series of less than one hundred units that have yet to undergo testing and certification. These prototype batteries, often used in applications such as cars, forklifts, tools, drones, and golf carts, lack testing certificates and approval marks, which introduces unique risks for transportation and storage. As a result, strict requirements apply.

“At SGS, we help customers move forward by providing expertise on the requirements and permits involved in transporting these types of hazardous goods,” says Jelmer Bruijnes, Sales Executive at SGS. “Thanks to our experience and knowledge of hazardous materials, we know exactly what is and isn’t possible.

Recently, a customer believed that their prototype batteries couldn’t be shipped because airlines or shipping companies might consider them an unreliable product. However, with our expertise, we ensured that the shipment was on its way within two weeks, fully compliant with the right regulations and properly packaged.” This is where Berlin Packaging Dangerous Goods comes into play. With both companies operating from the same building near Schiphol Airport, they can continuously exchange knowledge and expertise. "If specific packaging requirements are needed, we can act quickly," Jelmer explains.

"We discuss the best possible packaging solution and initiate the process. Within Berlin Packaging Dangerous Goods, they offer the ideal packaging solutions for our customers' prototype batteries. That means: clean, without vermiculite, allowing the batteries to be used on-site without delay. Naturally, all packaging is UN-certified and readily available from stock."

While Berlin Packaging takes care of the packaging, SGS handles the documentation, arranges transport options, and obtains the necessary approvals and permits. Thanks to a global network, they can often coordinate quickly with government agencies to facilitate the shipment of dangerous goods. All of this ensures that customers' prototype batteries reach their destination safely—whether by air, sea, or road transport.

Solution and Impact: Safety First

For SGS and its customers, this collaboration ensures that prototype batteries can be shipped worldwide in a timely manner, despite logistical challenges—all while complying with the correct regulations and packaging requirements. The UN-certified packaging is available in various standard sizes, allowing SGS and its customers to respond quickly to new requests. This flexibility is crucial in a world where demand for batteries in electric vehicles, energy storage, and innovative developments is growing exponentially.

Future-proof packaging

With increasing electrification and the rising importance of batteries across industries, the demand for transport solutions for (prototype) lithium batteries will continue to grow in the coming years. The partnership between Berlin Packaging Dangerous Goods and SGS enables businesses to focus on innovation while leaving packaging and logistics in expert hands. Together, Berlin Packaging and SGS ensure that customers have access to safe, efficient, and future-proof packaging and transport solutions for dangerous goods.

We are happy and proud of the collaboration with SGS because this way we can perfectly help customers with difficult packaging questions.
