These are often perishable goods and are packaged in special conditions to extend the shelf life, which means that the packaging also needs to satisfy specific requirements. This includes heat treatments such as pasteurisation and sterilisation. High-pressure pascalisation is also rapidly gaining in popularity.

Pasteurization

PASTEURIZATION

Filling packaging while hot and/or after pasteurization can extend the shelf life. The foods are heated to 100 degrees to kill bacteria. Pasteurization is used for foods that are stored chilled – such as sauces for meals and soups. Pasteurization can also ensure that high acid fruit products can be stored for longer periods at room temperature, such as fruit puree and ketchup.

Various materials can be used for this process according to product, process and storage conditions.

Sterilization

STERILIZATION

Sterilization ensures that foods can be stored for long periods at room temperature. Sterilised products are heated in an autoclave to well over 100C°, which kills all bacteria and spores. Frequently used packaging includes Doypacks and K-seal stand-up pouches as well as flat pouches. Different types of materials can be used for this process, with a sufficient barrier to keep the products fresh and for instance enable the product to be heated in the microwave.

Pascalization

PASCALIZATION

Pascalization is a relatively new method of preserving food. It uses extremely high pressure of up to 6,000 bar to kill bacterial and mould. This extends the shelf life and the product also retains its flavour and nutritional content. We can provide your packaging to suit this process.
