Dangerous Goods Category B Packaging

Packaging Category B, UN3373

At Berlin Packaging, we specialize in high-quality Category B, classified under UN3373, packaging solutions designed to meet strict international regulations while ensuring the safe handling of these sensitive materials.

PACKAGING FOR Biological Substances

Category B Packaging, classified under UN3373, is essential for the safe and compliant transport of biological substances. These are materials that, while potentially infectious, fall within a lower risk classification (Category B) and require specific containment to prevent leaks, spills, or contamination during transit.

Berlin Packagings Dangerous Goods Division supplies a wide range of certified packages, and offer packaging solutions for biochemical materials and category B materials (diagnostic specimens packaging, UN 3373). Diagnostic specimens must be in packages that comply with packing instruction 650. This diagnostic packing standard is mandatory for transport by road, as well as by air, and refers to the packing strength, and water and air tightness (95 kPa), the absorbent material, etc.

When it comes to dry ice shipments we have a wide range of different package sizes and also special leak-proof and airtight pouches that are resistant to the cold. We are happy to inform you about UN3373 Category B packaging solutions.

Key Requirements for UN3373

Category B packaging solutions must follow precise requirements. UN3373 Category B packaging must have three protective layers to ensure that any accidental leaks are contained

• Primary Receptacle: This is the innermost layer, typically a leak-proof container that directly holds the biological substance.

• Secondary Packaging: A durable, leak-proof layer that contains the primary receptacle. It provides additional security in case of any rupture or damage to the primary container.

• Outer Packaging: The outer layer is rigid, protecting against external impacts during transport. It ensures that the entire package withstands handling and meets international regulations.

In addition to the above requirements, UN3373 shipments must be clearly labeled as “Biological Substance, Category B”, with the UN3373 mark to ensure visibility and compliance. Packaging must include absorbent material between layers to contain any potential leaks, and temperature control options, like cold packs, can be added when specific transport conditions are required.

Please do not hesitate to contact us for questions about packaging for biological substances.
